How to prioritize conversion rate tests

A simple framework for deciding which CRO ideas deserve attention first when resources are limited.

Most conversion rate programs fail because they produce a long list of ideas with no serious ranking logic behind them. Teams end up choosing tests based on personal preference, not expected impact.

That is avoidable.

Start with friction, not inspiration

The best tests usually come from a visible bottleneck in the journey:

  • a product page with high exit rate
  • a cart step where mobile users drop off
  • a landing page with strong traffic but weak intent capture
  • a merchandising section that gets seen but rarely clicked

When a test begins with observed friction, the hypothesis is already grounded in user behavior.

Score ideas with three lenses

Keep the scoring model simple:

  1. Impact: if this works, how much can it move revenue or lead quality?
  2. Confidence: how strong is the evidence behind the hypothesis?
  3. Effort: how much design, development, QA, and analysis work will it take?

This does not need a perfect formula. It just needs consistency. A good lightweight system beats a sophisticated system nobody uses.

Protect the testing pipeline

Do not run too many tests at once. Overlapping changes make analysis messy and reduce learning quality. It is better to run fewer, cleaner experiments with stronger notes than to create a backlog that feels active but produces weak conclusions.

Documentation matters here. Record the hypothesis, the metric that matters, the expected direction, and what you will do if the test wins or loses.

Focus on learning velocity

The real benefit of CRO is not just the result of one experiment. It is the speed at which the team gets smarter about customer behavior. Prioritization should support that learning loop, not just chase isolated wins.
